My Approach
Some pearls of wisdom from a
Solution-Focused Brief Therapist
- Change is CERTAIN and CONSTANT!
- If you want therapy to be successful, your desire to change must be bigger than your fears.
- You must be able to imagine your IDEAL LIFE. What is it that you truly want???
- You know more than you think you know.
- Somewhere along the line, you have tried something that worked in improving your situation. Even if just a little bit. Or even just for a little while. Do MORE of that.
- You know quite a bit about what DOESN’T work for you. STOP trying those things (even if they work brilliantly for your father’s co-worker’s son, your cousin, your BFF, characters in books or movies, or any other people in seemingly similar situations as yours.)
- Trying new strategies is ESSENTIAL. If you’ve never tried it before, how do you know if it does or doesn’t work???? (Do I sound like your mother when she was first trying to get you to try her new kale and sweet potato soup recipe??)
- I don’t need to understand every pain from your past to be able to help you in the present and the future.
- As much as I am sure I will enjoy our sessions together, part of my job is to get you to a point where you don’t need to come to weekly therapy. Solution-focused therapy is meant to be relatively brief and something you access intermittently throughout your life – not something that is a permanent fixture in your life.
- You might have trouble believing me when I tell you this, but you ALREADY have the strength and resources that you need to solve your problems. Yup. You do.
